Think You Know Your Core Values? Most Don’t.

The Clarity Gap That Good People Don’t See

From my experience, 90% (or more) of people don’t know their core values. I didn’t make this up. I’ve done my own personal study over 20 years, and it’s the same story every time. They might believe they do. But when it comes time to name them, almost everyone struggles. And if you dare to ask what those values actually mean or how they live them, very few can answer with clarity. And that’s a problem — because not knowing your values has real consequences. But knowing them and how to live them has tremendous benefits.

Research shows that people who know and live by their core values are:

  • Happier

  • Healthier

  • More productive

  • More resilient

More specifically, they report:

  • Higher life satisfaction and emotional well-being

  • Stronger self-esteem

  • Lower anxiety and depression

  • Better decision-making

  • More focus and follow-through on what matters most

  • Greater effectiveness at work

  • More trust from peers

  • And stronger leadership and team-building skills

In other words, values clarity isn’t just a soft skill. It’s a competitive advantage that makes life better.

But Here’s The Challenge

Most people don’t walk around saying, “I don’t know what I believe in.” In fact, when I ask people if they have core values, the answer is almost always:

Chat bubbles on a white background. Text includes: "Uh... yeah." "Great! What are they?" and "Um... being kind, taking care of my family..."

These are good, morally decent people. But what’s happening here? It’s not a reflection of their character. It’s a reflection of their clarity – what I call the Clarity Gap.

It’s An Invisible Challenge

Most people assume they know their values because they’re morally good. And they likely are. But when it comes time to name those values… To define what they really look like in action… To apply them as daily filters for decisions, relationships, and priorities… They pause. They guess. They speak in generalities. Not because they lack character. But because they’ve never been taught how to clarify their values and turn them into personal RULES for living.

And why is this a problem? Because it leads to incredible inconsistencies in the way you think, feel, speak, and act.

And of course, the opposite is also true. When you know your values, believe in them, and follow them as your “RULES,” they lead to consistencies that bring more happiness, health, productivity, and success.

So, What’s the Difference Between Morals and Values?

Chart comparing morals and values. Morals: community standards. Values: personal beliefs. Includes meaning, source, guidance, expectation.

Let's break it down:

  • Morals are externally influenced — shaped by society, religion, and upbringing. They help you fit in and be a “good” person.

  • Values (your RULES) are internally defined — shaped by your life experience, self-reflection, and aspirations. They guide how you think, feel, speak, and act.

Being moral means you’re a good person. It means you live by what’s right and expected in your community. But knowing your values means you’re clear and intentional in “HOW” you live your life.

Why This Clarity Matters

When you define your values as personal RULES, they become your operating system — a powerful filter for how you live and lead.

When you know your RULES:

  • You make better decisions

  • You spend time on what matters most

  • You build stronger relationships

  • You navigate stress and conflict more effectively

  • You define success on your own terms

  • You create habits that stick — because they’re rooted in identity, not willpower

Final Point of View: A Question Worth Asking

Being morally good is admirable. Frankly, it’s expected—and a pretty low bar. But living by clear RULES turns good intentions into meaningful impact. This isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about reconnecting with who you are at your core—and learning to live it out more consistently each day.

Here’s a question worth asking: What are your top five Core Values—your personal RULES that guide how you make choices, how you prioritize your effort, where you spend your time, and who you invest your time with? Can you name them? Can you describe what they look like in action?

If not… maybe it’s time to find out.

Closing your Clarity Gap might be the most important step you take this year.
